*These devices measure HRV but use a different calculation method (RMSSD) than Apple Health accepts (SDNN), so HRV data doesn't sync.
Why HRV Matters
Heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the strongest predictors of IBD flares. The Mount Sinai research showed HRV changes can appear up to 7 weeks before symptoms.
Without HRV data, Flarity can still detect patterns in sleep and resting heart rate, but the early warning window is shorter.
Device Details
Apple Watch (Recommended)
Best for: Maximum early warning, most complete data
- ✓ Continuous HRV monitoring
- ✓ Resting heart rate trends
- ✓ Wrist temperature (Series 8+)
- ✓ Sleep stages and duration
- ✓ Activity and steps
- ✓ Blood oxygen (SpO2)
This is the only device that provides all the signals Flarity uses for maximum prediction accuracy.
Oura Ring
Best for: Comfortable sleep tracking, discrete wear
- ✓ Sleep duration and stages
- ✓ Resting heart rate
- ✓ Steps and activity
- ✗ HRV (uses RMSSD, doesn't sync to Apple Health)
- ✗ Temperature trends
Oura provides excellent sleep data that improves Flarity's accuracy. Many users wear both Oura (for sleep) and Apple Watch (for daytime HRV).
Whoop
Best for: Athletes focused on strain and recovery
- ✓ Sleep (basic stages)
- ✓ Resting heart rate
- ✓ Blood oxygen
- ✗ HRV (uses RMSSD, doesn't sync)
- ✗ Continuous heart rate
- ✗ Steps
Whoop's limited Apple Health sync means less data for Flarity to analyze.
Garmin
Best for: Runners and endurance athletes
- ✓ Sleep duration
- ✓ Resting heart rate
- ✓ Steps and workouts
- ✗ HRV (uses RMSSD, doesn't sync)
- ✗ Body Battery or stress scores
iPhone Only
Best for: Users without a wearable
- ✓ Steps (via motion sensor)
- ⚠ Sleep (if enabled or using sleep tracking app)
- ✗ Heart rate
- ✗ HRV
Without a wearable, Flarity focuses on your symptom patterns, medication adherence, and clinical scores. You still get excellent reports and pattern analysis - just with scheduled check-ins instead of signal-triggered prompts.
The Bottom Line
Want the longest early warning? Apple Watch gives you the most complete data.
Already have Oura/Whoop/Garmin? Connect it. You'll get better accuracy than iPhone alone.
No wearable? Flarity still works. Your reports, medication tracking, and pattern analysis are fully functional.
